I can't believe you knew it right away - this has been haunting me for YEARS. M71 and M83: Carl Biemiller, The Magic Ball from Mars I remember this book from the mid fifties. I'd give a synopsis, but the stumpee seems to have it down pretty accurately! :) The stumper can be filed as Solved.
